Affton Summary

Affton is a census-designated place (CDP) located in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 20,307 at the 2010 census. It is a suburb of St. Louis and is part of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area.

History

Affton was first settled in the early 1800s by German immigrants. The area was originally known as German Ridge, and the first post office was established in 1867. The name was changed to Affton in 1891, after the Aff family, who were prominent in the area. The Aff family owned a large tract of land in the area, and the name was chosen to honor them.

Geography

Affton is located at 38°33′17″N 90°20′45″W (38.554722, -90.345833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), all land.

Economy

Affton is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The area is also home to several industrial parks, which provide employment opportunities for many of the area's residents.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 20,307 people, 8,093 households, and 5,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,444.2 people per square mile (943.7/km2). There were 8,521 housing units at an average density of 1,026.2/sq mi (396.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 92.45% White, 4.45% African American, 0.17% Native American, 1.17% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.
There were 8,093 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 23.9% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $40,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $22,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.2% of those under age 18 and 4.7% of those age 65 or over.
