Sugar Hill Summary

Sugar Hill is a city located in Gwinnett County, Georgia, United States. It is a suburb of Atlanta and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 18,522.

Geography

Sugar Hill is located in the northeastern part of Gwinnett County at 34°04′N 84°06′W (34.07, -84.10). It is bordered to the north by the city of Buford, to the east by the city of Suwanee, to the south by the city of Duluth, and to the west by the city of Lawrenceville.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2sqmi, of which 11.1sqmi is land and 0.1sqmi (0.72%) is water.

History

Sugar Hill was founded in 1939 by the Georgia General Assembly as a planned community. The city was named after the sugar cane fields that were once located in the area. The city was incorporated in 1975 and has grown steadily since then.

Economy

Sugar Hill is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to several large employers, including the Gwinnett Medical Center, the Gwinnett County Public Schools, and the Gwinnett County government.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 18,522 people, 6,845 households, and 5,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,664.2 people per square mile (642.3/km2). There were 7,093 housing units at an average density of 637.7 per square mile (246.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 16.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 8.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.2% of the population.
There were 6,845 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.7% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $63,945, and the median income for a family was $71,945. Males had a median income of $50,945 versus $36,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $27,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
