Georgetown Summary
Georgetown is a small city located in Quitman County, Georgia, United States. It is the county seat of Quitman County and is located in the southwestern part of the state. The population of Georgetown was 1,845 at the 2010 census.
Geography
Georgetown is located at 31°45'25" North, 84°45'25" West (31.756944, -84.756944). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.
History
Georgetown was founded in 1854 and was named after George Washington. The city was incorporated in 1859. During the Civil War, the city was the site of a skirmish between Union and Confederate forces.
Economy
Georgetown's economy is largely based on agriculture and forestry. The city is home to several large farms and timber companies. The city also has a small manufacturing sector, with several small factories producing a variety of products.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.7 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 708.3 per square mile (273.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 65.2% White, 32.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% were married couples living together, 22.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 83.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,000, and the median income for a family was $30,000. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,000. About 18.2% of families and 22.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 16.7% of those age 65 or over.
