Turner County is a county located in the south-central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,930. The county seat is Ashburn. The county was created on August 18, 1905 and named for Henry Gray Turner, a former state senator and Confederate soldier.
Geography
Turner County is located in the south-central part of Georgia, approximately 90 miles south of Atlanta. It is bordered by Wilcox County to the north, Crisp County to the east, Worth County to the south, and Dooly County to the west. The county has a total area of 287 square miles, of which 286 square miles is land and 1 square mile (0.4%) is water.
The county is located in the Lower Flint River sub-basin of the ACF River Basin (Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin). The Flint River forms the western border of the county.
Demographics
As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 8,930 people, 3,521 households, and 2,521 families residing in the county. The population density was 31.3 inhabitants per square mile (12.1/km2). There were 4,093 housing units at an average density of 14.3 per square mile (5.5/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 57.2% white, 40.2% black or African American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% American Indian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 1.7% of the population.
In terms of ancestry, 16.2% were American, 8.2% were English, and 6.2% were Irish. Of the 3,521 households, 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 28.7% were non-families, and 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.02. The median age was 39.7 years.
