Muscogee County Summary
Muscogee County, Georgia is located in the west-central part of the state, and is part of the Columbus, Georgia metropolitan area. It is bordered by Harris County to the north, Talbot County to the east, Chattahoochee County to the south, and Marion County to the west. The county seat is Columbus, and the county has a total area of 221 square miles.
History
Muscogee County was created in 1826 from parts of Marion and Troup counties. It was named for the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, which had inhabited the area for centuries prior to European settlement. The county was home to several Native American tribes, including the Creek, Cherokee, and Choctaw.
The county was home to several important historical sites, including the Creek Indian Agency, which was established in 1825. The agency was responsible for the removal of the Creek Indians from the area, and the relocation of the tribe to Oklahoma.
The county was also home to the Battle of Columbus, which took place in April 1865. The battle was part of the Union Army's campaign to capture the city of Columbus, and was the last major battle of the Civil War.
