Tualatin Summary

Tualatin is a city located in Washington County, Oregon, United States. It is a suburb of Portland and is located south of the city. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 26,054.

Geography

Tualatin is located at 45°21'25" North, 122°45'45" West (45.356944, -122.762500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which, 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
The city is located on the Tualatin River, which flows through the city and is a tributary of the Willamette River. The city is bordered by Tigard to the north, Sherwood to the east, King City to the south, and unincorporated areas of Washington County to the west.

History

Tualatin was first settled in the 1840s by pioneers who were attracted to the area by its fertile soil and abundant wildlife. The first post office was established in 1851 and the city was officially incorporated in 1913.
The city was named after the Tualatin River, which was named by the Kalapuya Indians who lived in the area. The word "Tualatin" means "gentle and easy flowing" in the Kalapuya language.

Economy

Tualatin is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to several corporate headquarters, including Nike, Intel, and Tektronix.
The city's largest employer is Intel, which has a large campus in the city. Other major employers include Nike, Tektronix, and the Tualatin Valley Water District.

The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 8.3% Asian, 0.3% Pacific Islander, 3.2% from other races, and 4.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.3% of the population.
The median income for a household in the city was $62,845, and the median income for a family was $76,945. Males had a median income of $51,945 versus $41,845 for females. The per capita income for the city was $30,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
