Toledo is a small city located in Lincoln County, Oregon, United States. It is situated on the Yaquina River, about 10 miles (16 km) east of Newport. The population was 1,197 at the 2010 census. Toledo is part of the Newport, Oregon Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Toledo was founded in 1876 by a group of settlers from Toledo, Ohio. The city was named after the Ohio city, and was incorporated in 1891. The city was originally a logging and fishing town, and was the site of the first sawmill in Lincoln County. The city was also the site of the first bridge across the Yaquina River, which was built in 1876.

Geography

Toledo is located at 44°37′17″N 123°54′17″W (44.6214, -123.9047). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Toledo's economy is largely based on tourism and fishing. The city is home to several marinas, and is a popular destination for recreational boaters. The city also has a number of restaurants, shops, and other businesses catering to tourists.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the city. The population density was 902.2 people per square mile (348.7/km2). There were 476 housing units at an average density of 391.2 per square mile (150.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 0.2% African American, 1.5% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 3.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,000, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,000. About 10.2% of families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.7% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
