Gold Hill Summary
Gold Hill is a small city located in Jackson County, Oregon, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Rogue River, about 15 miles northeast of Medford. The population was 1,220 at the 2010 census.
History
Gold Hill was founded in 1852 by miners who were searching for gold in the area. The town was originally called "Gold Diggings" and was later changed to Gold Hill. The town was incorporated in 1885.
In the late 19th century, Gold Hill was a bustling mining town with a population of over 2,000. The town was home to several saloons, hotels, and stores. The town was also home to a number of Chinese immigrants who worked in the mines and on the railroads.
In the early 20th century, the mining industry began to decline and the population of Gold Hill began to dwindle. By the 1950s, the population had dropped to just over 500.

Gold Hill is located at 42°25′17″N 122°59′45″W (42.4214, -122.9958). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Gold Hill's economy is largely based on tourism. The city is home to several wineries, a brewery, and a distillery. The city also has a number of antique stores, art galleries, and restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,220 people, 517 households, and 327 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,006.7 people per square mile (389.2/km2). There were 567 housing units at an average density of 471.8 per square mile (182.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 517 households, out of which 24.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 22.2% from 25 to 44, 30.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females.
