Gervais is a small city located in Marion County, Oregon, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Willamette River, about 10 miles (16 km) north of Salem, the state capital. The population was 1,945 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Gervais is located at 45°53'7" North, 123°2'17" West (45.885, -123.038). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.

History

Gervais was founded in 1876 by French-Canadian settlers, who named the town after their leader, Joseph Gervais. The town was incorporated in 1891.
Gervais was a major stop on the Oregon Electric Railway, which ran from Portland to Eugene. The railway was built in 1908 and operated until 1933.

Economy

Gervais is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a few other small shops. The city is also home to a number of farms, which produce a variety of crops, including hay, wheat, and corn.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,945 people, 745 households, and 517 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,093.3 people per square mile (808.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 81.2% White, 0.6% African American, 0.9% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 13.2% from other races, and 3.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 22.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
