Vernonburg Summary

Vernonburg is a small city located in Chatham County, Georgia, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Vernon River, just south of the city of Savannah. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Vernonburg was founded in 1887 by the Reverend William Vernon, a Methodist minister from South Carolina. He purchased a large tract of land along the Vernon River and named the area after himself. The town was incorporated in 1889 and quickly became a popular summer resort for wealthy Savannahians.
The town was home to a number of prominent citizens, including the first mayor, Dr. William B. Bulloch, who served from 1889 to 1891. Other notable residents included the first postmaster, Dr. John B. Bulloch, and the first school principal, Miss Mary E. Bulloch.
The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a sawmill, a grist mill, a cotton gin, a general store, and a hotel. The town also had a number of churches, including the Methodist Church, the Baptist Church, and the Presbyterian Church.

Geography

Vernonburg is located at 32°2′17″N 81°4′17″W (32.038, -81.071). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all land.

Economy

Vernonburg is primarily a residential community, with most of its residents employed in the nearby city of Savannah. The town does have a few small businesses, including a convenience store, a gas station, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 517 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,637.2 people per square mile (1,017.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 1,145.2 per square mile (441.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 17.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
