History
Varnell was founded in 1887 by William Varnell, a local farmer. The city was named after him. The city was incorporated in 1906.
Geography
Varnell is located at 34°51'25" North, 84°59'45" West (34.856944, -84.995833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.
Economy
Varnell's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several small businesses, including a feed store, a hardware store, and a lumber yard. The city also has a few restaurants and a few small retail stores.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 517 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 776 housing units at an average density of 645.2 per square mile (249.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
