History
Tunnel Hill was founded in 1848 as a railroad town. The town was named for the nearby tunnel that was built for the Western and Atlantic Railroad. The tunnel was built in 1848 and was the first railroad tunnel in the state of Georgia. The town was incorporated in 1882.

Tunnel Hill is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, a bank, and several restaurants. The city is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a carpet mill, a furniture factory, and a plastics plant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,817 people, 717 households, and 498 families residing in the city. The population density was 819.3 people per square mile (316.7/km2). There were 790 housing units at an average density of 355.3 per square mile (137.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.90% White, 9.90% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.43% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
