History

Thomson was founded in 1837 as a railroad town and was named after John Edgar Thomson, the first president of the Georgia Railroad. The town was incorporated in 1854 and was the first city in Georgia to be served by a railroad. The town was a major center for the Confederate States of America during the Civil War, and was the site of a major battle in 1864.

Geography

Thomson is located at 33°27'25" North, 82°32'45" West (33.456944, -82.545833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Thomson is home to several major employers, including the Georgia Department of Corrections, which operates the Thomson State Prison, and the McDuffie County Board of Education. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

As of the 2010 census, there were 6,828 people, 2,717 households, and 1,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 845.2 people per square mile (326.2/km2). There were 3,093 housing units at an average density of 382.2 per square mile (147.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 54.2% White, 40.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 2,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.2% were married couples living together, 22.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
