Stockbridge Summary
Stockbridge, Georgia is a city located in Henry County, Georgia, United States. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and is located about 20 miles south of downtown Atlanta. The population was 25,636 at the 2010 census, up from 9,853 at the 2000 census.
History
The area that is now Stockbridge was first settled in the early 19th century by European-American settlers. The city was named after Stockbridge, Massachusetts, the hometown of one of the early settlers. The city was incorporated in 1895.
In the early 20th century, Stockbridge was a rural farming community. In the 1950s, the city began to experience rapid growth as Atlanta's suburbs expanded. The city was incorporated as a city in 1972.
Geography
Stockbridge is located in central Henry County at 33°33'25" North, 84°14'45" West (33.5569, -84.2458). It is bordered to the north by the city of McDonough, to the east by the city of Hampton, to the south by the city of Locust Grove, and to the west by the city of Ellenwood.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.9 km2), of which 16.1 square miles (41.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (0.62%) is water.
Economy
Stockbridge is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to several large employers, including the Henry County Board of Education, Piedmont Henry Hospital, and the Henry County Government.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 25,636 people, 8,945 households, and 6,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,594.3 people per square mile (614.7/km2). There were 9,853 housing units at an average density of 609.3 per square mile (235.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 54.2% White, 33.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.2% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.2% of the population.
There were 8,945 households, out of which 41.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 16.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% were non-families. 20.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 4.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.31.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 30.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 35.2% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 6.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $56,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
