Ringgold Summary

History

The city of Ringgold, Georgia is located in the northwest corner of the state, in Catoosa County. It is situated along the Tennessee border, and is part of the Chattanooga, TN-GA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded in 1846, and was named after Major Samuel Ringgold, a hero of the Mexican-American War.
The city was originally a small farming community, and the first settlers were mostly of Scottish and Irish descent. The city was incorporated in 1847, and the first mayor was William H. Anderson. The city grew slowly, and by the late 19th century, it had become a popular stop on the Western and Atlantic Railroad.
In the early 20th century, Ringgold began to experience a period of growth and prosperity. The city was home to several factories, including a cotton mill, a furniture factory, and a brickyard. The city also had a thriving business district, with several stores and restaurants.
During the Civil Rights Movement, Ringgold was a center of activity. The city was the site of several protests and marches, and was the birthplace of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).
