History
Remerton was founded in 1891 by the Remerton Land and Improvement Company. The company was formed by a group of investors from Valdosta, Georgia, who purchased the land from the estate of William Remerton. The town was named after William Remerton, who had owned the land prior to the purchase.
The town was incorporated in 1895 and was the first incorporated town in Lowndes County. The town was originally a farming community, but it soon developed into a manufacturing center. The first industry in Remerton was a cotton mill, which was built in 1895. The mill was later converted into a paper mill, which operated until the early 2000s.
In the early 1900s, Remerton was home to several other industries, including a sawmill, a brickyard, and a furniture factory. The town also had a number of stores, including a general store, a drug store, and a hardware store.

The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 28.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06.
