Redan Summary
Redan is a city located in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. It is a suburb of Atlanta and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The population was 8,945 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Redan was originally inhabited by the Creek Indians. The first settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s. The town was named after a railroad station that was built in the area in 1845. The town was incorporated in 1891.
Geography
Redan is located at 33°45'25" North, 84°10'45" West (33.756944, -84.179167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.
Economy
Redan is home to several businesses, including a number of retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to a number of industrial and manufacturing companies.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 8,945 people, 3,541 households, and 2,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,133.2 people per square mile (822.3/km2). There were 3,717 housing units at an average density of 883.3 per square mile (341.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 57.2% African American, 37.2% White, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 22.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $41,917. Males had a median income of $31,917 versus $27,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,917.
