Perry, Georgia is a city located in Houston County, Georgia, United States. It is the county seat of Houston County and is part of the Warner Robins, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Perry was 13,839 at the 2010 census, up from 10,591 at the 2000 census.

History

Perry was founded in 1823 as the county seat of Houston County. It was named after Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, a hero of the War of 1812. Perry was incorporated as a town in 1824 and as a city in 1872.
The city was a major center of cotton production in the 19th century. The Houston County Courthouse, built in 1891, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Geography

Perry is located in central Houston County at 32°29'25" North, 83°45'17" West (32.4903, -83.7548). It is bordered to the north by Warner Robins, to the east by Centerville, to the south by Bonaire, and to the west by Byron.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Perry has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.9 km2), of which 16.1 square miles (41.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (0.62%) is water.

Economy

Perry is home to several major employers, including Robins Air Force Base, the Houston County Board of Education, and the Houston County Sheriff's Office. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 13,839 people, 5,093 households, and 3,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 859.2 people per square mile (331.2/km2). There were 5,717 housing units at an average density of 355.7 per square mile (137.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 25.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.7% of the population.
There were 5,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,845, and the median income for a family was $45,945. Males had a median income of $32,917 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,945. About 11.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
