North Decatur Summary

North Decatur is a census-designated place (CDP) located in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. It is a suburb of Atlanta and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The population was 8,945 at the 2010 census.

History

North Decatur was originally part of the Decatur area, which was founded in 1823. The area was annexed by the City of Atlanta in 1910, and the city of Decatur was incorporated in 1923. North Decatur was annexed by the City of Atlanta in 1952.

Geography

North Decatur is located at 33°47'17" North, 84°17'45" West (33.7881, -84.2958). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

Economy

North Decatur is home to several businesses, including a number of restaurants, retail stores, and professional services. The area is also home to a number of medical facilities, including Emory University Hospital Midtown, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite, and Northside Hospital.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,945 people, 3,845 households, and 2,072 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,133.2 people per square mile (822.7/km2). There were 4,039 housing units at an average density of 962.2/sq mi (371.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 68.45% White, 24.45% African American, 0.17% Native American, 4.45% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.17% from other races, and 1.30% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.45% of the population.
There were 3,845 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 46.2% were non-families. 33.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 20.2% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 39.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $60,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $35,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $27,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
