History

Mt. Zion was founded in 1845 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Carrollton. The town was named after the nearby Mt. Zion Methodist Church, which was built in 1844. The town was incorporated in 1887 and was the first incorporated town in Carroll County.
The town was a major center for cotton production in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The town was also home to several mills, including the Mt. Zion Cotton Mill, which was established in 1887 and operated until the early 1960s.
