History

Monroe was founded in 1818 and was named after James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States. The city was originally known as Fort Monroe, as it was the site of a fort built by the Georgia Militia during the War of 1812. The fort was destroyed in 1814, but the city was rebuilt and incorporated in 1821.
In the late 19th century, Monroe was a major center for cotton production and processing. The city was also home to several cotton mills, which provided employment for many of the city’s residents.
