Midway, Georgia is a small city located in Liberty County, Georgia, United States. It is part of the Hinesville-Fort Stewart metropolitan statistical area. The population was 1,741 at the 2010 census.

History

Midway was founded in 1752 by a group of settlers from the Midway Congregational Church in Midway, Georgia. The town was named after the church, which was named after the biblical reference to the “midway” between Jerusalem and Jericho. The town was incorporated in 1837 and was the county seat of Liberty County until 1876.

Geography

Midway is located at 31°49'25" North, 81°27'17" West (31.823607, -81.454722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all land.

Economy

Midway’s economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to several farms, including a large dairy farm, and is a popular destination for hunting and fishing. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and a few manufacturing plants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,741 people, 690 households, and 463 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,323.2 people per square mile (510.7/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 562.3 per square mile (217.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.45% White, 28.45% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 2.48% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.17% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.3% were married couples living together, 19.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.6% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
