Hinesville is a city located in Liberty County, Georgia, United States. It is the county seat of Liberty County and is located near the Atlantic coast. The city is part of the Hinesville-Fort Stewart metropolitan statistical area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 33,437.

History

Hinesville was founded in 1837 and named after Charleton Hines, a local politician. The city was incorporated in 1916 and has since grown to become the largest city in Liberty County. The city was a major center for the Confederate Army during the Civil War and was the site of several battles.

Geography

Hinesville is located in the southeastern part of Liberty County, Georgia, at 31°49'N 81°37'W (31.817, -81.619). It is bordered to the north by the city of Allenhurst, to the east by the city of Walthourville, to the south by the city of Midway, and to the west by the city of Flemington. The city has a total area of 16.2 square miles, of which 16.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water.

Climate

Hinesville has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is 64.3°F, with an average high of 79.3°F in July and an average low of 48.3°F in January. The average annual precipitation is 51.2 inches, with an average of 4.7 inches of snow per year.

Economy

Hinesville’s economy is largely based on the military, with Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield located nearby. The city is also home to several large employers, including Walmart, Georgia-Pacific, and Liberty Regional Medical Center. The city also has a growing tourism industry, with several attractions such as the Fort Stewart Military Museum and the Midway Museum.

As of the 2010 census, there were 33,437 people, 11,845 households, and 8,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,062.2 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 54.2% White, 33.3% African American, 0.5% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 7.3% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.2% of the population.

The per capita income for the city was $18,945.
