Hazlehurst is a city located in Jeff Davis County, Georgia, United States. The population was 4,142 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jeff Davis County.
History
Hazlehurst was founded in 1826 and named after Colonel George Hazlehurst, a prominent local planter. The city was incorporated in 1856. During the Civil War, Hazlehurst was the site of a Confederate camp and a skirmish between Union and Confederate forces.
In the late 19th century, Hazlehurst was a major center for the turpentine industry. The city was also home to a large sawmill and a cotton gin.
Geography
Hazlehurst is located at 31°45'25" North, 82°37'25" West (31.756944, -82.623889). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.
Economy
Hazlehurst is the economic center of Jeff Davis County. The city is home to a variety of businesses, including a lumber mill, a furniture factory, a poultry processing plant, and a variety of retail stores. The city is also home to a number of small businesses, including restaurants, auto repair shops, and other service-oriented businesses.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 4,072 people, 1,541 households, and 1,039 families residing in the city. The population density was 976.2 people per square mile (377.3/km2). There were 1,717 housing units at an average density of 412.2 per square mile (159.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 57.45% White, 40.90% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.17% of the population.
There were 1,541 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% were married couples living together, 22.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 81.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 74.3 males.
