Gray Summary

Gray is a city located in Jones County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,092 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Macon Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Gray was founded in 1887 by the Central of Georgia Railway. The town was named after the railroad's president, Alfred Gray. The town was incorporated in 1906.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.2 square miles (8.3 km2), all land.

Economy

Gray is home to several businesses, including a manufacturing plant, a lumber mill, and a variety of retail stores. The city is also home to a number of small businesses, including a restaurant, a barber shop, and a beauty salon.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,945 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in the city. The population density was 919.2 people per square mile (354.3/km2). There were 1,179 housing units at an average density of 369.2 per square mile (142.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.45% White, 17.90% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.94% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.90% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.08.
