Chickamauga Summary

Chickamauga, Georgia is a small city located in Walker County, Georgia, United States. It is situated along the Chickamauga Creek, which is a tributary of the Tennessee River. The city is part of the Chattanooga, Tennessee-Georgia metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 2,245.

History

The area that is now Chickamauga was originally inhabited by the Cherokee Indians. The name Chickamauga is derived from the Cherokee word for “river of death”, which was given to the creek due to the numerous battles that were fought in the area during the Civil War.
The first settlers in the area were the family of John Walker, who arrived in 1835. The town was officially founded in 1848 and was named after the nearby Chickamauga Creek. The town was incorporated in 1872.

Geography

Chickamauga is located at 34°56'25" North, 85°17'45" West (34.940278, -85.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Chickamauga is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several manufacturing plants, including a plant that produces automotive parts. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 2,245 people, 890 households, and 602 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,019.2 people per square mile (393.3/km2). There were 990 housing units at an average density of 447.7 per square mile (173.1/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
