Candler McAfee is a census-designated place (CDP) located in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 8,945 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area.
History
The area that is now Candler McAfee was originally inhabited by the Creek Indians. The area was first settled by Europeans in the early 1800s. The area was named after the Candler family, who were among the first settlers. The Candler family owned a large plantation in the area.
In the late 1800s, the area was developed as a railroad town. The town was named McAfee after the McAfee family, who owned a large amount of land in the area. The town was incorporated in 1892.
Geography
Candler McAfee is located at 33°45'25" North, 84°17'17" West (33.756944, -84.288333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Candler McAfee is largely based on retail and services. The area is home to several large retail stores, including Walmart, Target, and Home Depot. There are also several restaurants and other businesses in the area.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 8,945 people, 3,541 households, and 2,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,133.3 people per square mile (822.3/km2). There were 3,717 housing units at an average density of 877.3/sq mi (339.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 57.45% White, 33.90% African American, 0.20% Native American, 4.45% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.90% from other races, and 2.07% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.45% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $51,945. Males had a median income of $36,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $21,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
