Ware County Summary
Ware County is a county located in the southeastern corner of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 36,312. The county seat is Waycross. Ware County is part of the Waycross, GA Micropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Ware County was created in 1824 from parts of Appling and Tattnall counties. It was named for Nicholas Ware, a former United States Senator from Georgia.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 590 square miles (1,530 km2), of which 586 square miles (1,520 km2) is land and 4.2 square miles (11 km2) (0.7%) is water.
The majority of Ware County is located in the Satilla River sub-basin of the St. Marys-Satilla River basin, with just the northern corner of the county located in the Altamaha River sub-basin of the same larger St. Marys-Satilla River basin.
Economy
Ware County is home to a variety of industries, including manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism. The county is home to several large employers, including the Georgia-Pacific paper mill in Waycross, the Okefenokee Technical College, and the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge.
Agriculture is an important part of the local economy, with the county producing a variety of crops, including cotton, peanuts, corn, soybeans, and hay. The county is also home to several large poultry farms.
Tourism is also an important part of the local economy, with the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge and the Okefenokee Swamp Park attracting visitors from all over the world.
Demographics
As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 36,312 people, 13,845 households, and 9,845 families residing in the county. The population density was 62.0 inhabitants per square mile (23.9/km2). There were 15,845 housing units at an average density of 27.0 per square mile (10.5/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 68.2% white, 28.2% black or African American, 0.6% Asian, 0.3% American Indian, 0.9% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 2.2% of the population.
