History

Liberty County was created on December 15, 1777, from a portion of McIntosh County. It was named for the popular American ideal of liberty. The county was organized in 1784.

Liberty County is located in the southeastern part of Georgia, along the Atlantic Ocean. It is bordered by Long County to the north, McIntosh County to the east, Bryan County to the south, and Chatham County to the west. The county has a total area of 576 square miles, of which 545 square miles is land and 31 square miles (5.4%) is water.

Economy

The economy of Liberty County is largely based on the military presence in the area. Fort Stewart, located in the county, is the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi River. The military presence has led to a large number of businesses in the area, including retail stores, restaurants, and other services.
