Alma Summary

Alma is a city located in Bacon County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,890 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Bacon County.

History

Alma was founded in 1854 as the county seat of Bacon County. The city was named after the daughter of a local judge, who was named Alma. The city was incorporated in 1856.
During the Civil War, Alma was the site of a skirmish between Union and Confederate forces on July 30, 1864. The Union forces were victorious and the Confederate forces retreated.

Economy

Alma is the home of the Bacon County School System, which serves the county's students. The city is also home to several businesses, including a lumber mill, a furniture store, a grocery store, and a bank.

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,890 people, 1,541 households, and 1,039 families residing in the city. The population density was 925.2 people per square mile (356.9/km2).
