Alamo is a city located in Wheeler County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wheeler County.

History

Alamo was founded in 1871 by the Georgia General Assembly as the county seat of Wheeler County. The city was named after the Alamo, the famous fort in San Antonio, Texas. The city was incorporated in 1872.

Geography

Alamo is located at 32°25'25" North, 82°59'45" West (32.423750, -82.995833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

Economy

Alamo's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large poultry processing plants, as well as a number of smaller businesses. The city also has a small retail sector, with several stores and restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 837.2 people per square mile (323.7/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 368.2 per square mile (142.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 57.45% White, 40.45% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.71% from other races, and 1.13% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.13% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 22.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $22,917, and the median income for a family was $27,500. Males had a median income of $26,250 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the city was $12,845.
