History
Winston County was established in 1833, and was named after Major Joseph Winston, a Revolutionary War hero. The county was originally part of the Choctaw Nation, and was part of the Chickasaw Cession of 1832. The county was home to several Native American tribes, including the Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Natchez.
During the Civil War, Winston County was a major site of the Battle of Brice's Crossroads, which was fought between Confederate and Union forces in 1864. The battle was a major victory for the Confederate forces, and helped to secure the region for the Confederacy.
