History
Jasper County was established in 1833 from parts of Clarke and Jones counties. It was named for Sergeant William Jasper, a Revolutionary War hero who died in the Battle of Fort Moultrie. The county was originally part of the Choctaw Nation, and was home to several Native American tribes, including the Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Natchez.
In the early 19th century, the county was largely agricultural, with cotton being the main crop. The county was also home to several sawmills and gristmills. During the Civil War, Jasper County was the site of several battles, including the Battle of Ellisville in 1863.
