Byram Summary
Byram is a city located in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. It is part of the Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 7,386 at the 2010 census.
History
Byram was founded in 1887 by the Byram Land and Improvement Company. The company was formed by a group of investors from Jackson, Mississippi, who purchased land from the Choctaw Indians. The town was named after one of the investors, William Byram. The town was incorporated in 1906.
Geography
Byram is located at 32°19'25" North, 90°14'45" West (32.323750, -90.245833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
Byram is home to several businesses, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Lowe's Home Improvement store, and several restaurants. The city is also home to a number of industrial and manufacturing companies, including a paper mill, a plastics plant, and a metal fabrication plant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 6,717 people, 2,541 households, and 1,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 830.2 people per square mile (320.3/km2). There were 2,717 housing units at an average density of 335.3 per square mile (129.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.45% White, 29.45% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.17% of the population.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 36.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,813, and the median income for a family was $43,917. Males had a median income of $32,917 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 8.7% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
