Sandersville Summary

History

The town of Sandersville, Mississippi is located in Jones County, in the southeastern part of the state. It was founded in 1837 by William Sanders, a former slave who had purchased his freedom. Sandersville was originally known as “Sandersville Station” and was a stop on the Mobile and Ohio Railroad. The town was incorporated in 1848 and was named after its founder.
Sandersville was a small, rural town until the early 20th century, when the lumber industry began to boom in the area. The town was home to several sawmills and lumber companies, and the population grew rapidly. By the mid-20th century, Sandersville had become a thriving community with a population of over 1,000 people.

Geography

Sandersville is located in the southeastern part of Jones County, Mississippi. It is situated on the banks of the Leaf River, which flows through the town. The town is surrounded by rolling hills and forests, and is located about 25 miles from the state capital of Jackson.
