Raleigh Summary

Raleigh is a small town located in Smith County, Mississippi. It is situated in the northeast corner of the state, approximately 30 miles from the state capital of Jackson. The town has a population of approximately 1,500 people and is part of the larger Jackson metropolitan area.

History

Raleigh was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from North Carolina. The town was named after the capital of North Carolina, Raleigh. The town was originally a farming community, but it soon developed into a small trading center. The town was incorporated in 1845 and was the county seat of Smith County until 1871.
In the late 19th century, Raleigh was a thriving agricultural center. The town was home to several cotton gins, a sawmill, and a gristmill. The town also had a number of stores and businesses, including a hotel, a bank, and a newspaper.
In the early 20th century, Raleigh began to decline. The town was bypassed by the railroad and the population began to decline. The town was also hit hard by the Great Depression. In the 1950s, the town began to experience a resurgence as the economy began to improve.
