Quitman Summary

Quitman, Mississippi is a small town located in Clarke County, Mississippi. It is situated on the banks of the Chickasawhay River, and is the county seat of Clarke County. The town was founded in 1836 and was named after General John A. Quitman, a hero of the Mexican-American War. The population of Quitman was 2,072 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Quitman is located at 33°1′25″N 88°37′17″W (33.023607, -88.621345). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all land.

Economy

Quitman’s economy is largely based on agriculture and timber. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The town also has a small industrial park, which houses a few small manufacturing companies.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,072 people, 817 households, and 545 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,567.2 people per square mile (604.7/km2). There were 902 housing units at an average density of 690.2 per square mile (266.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 57.45% White, 41.45% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.10% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.58% of the population.
There were 817 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 22.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.09.
