Puckett Summary

Puckett is a small unincorporated community located in Rankin County, Mississippi. It is situated approximately 10 miles east of the state capital, Jackson. The population of Puckett was estimated to be 1,845 in 2019.

History

Puckett was founded in 1837 by William Puckett, a former slave who had purchased his freedom. He named the town after himself and it quickly became a thriving community. The town was home to a variety of businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a cotton gin, and a sawmill.
In the late 19th century, Puckett was a stop on the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad. The railroad brought new economic opportunities to the town, and it soon became a hub for the timber industry. The town also had a post office, which opened in 1887.

Geography

Puckett is located in Rankin County, Mississippi, approximately 10 miles east of the state capital, Jackson. The town is situated on the banks of the Pearl River, which flows through the area. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills. The climate is humid subtropical, with hot summers and mild winters.
