Port Gibson Summary

History

Port Gibson is a small city located in Claiborne County, Mississippi. It is situated on the banks of the Big Black River, and is the county seat of Claiborne County. The city was founded in 1803 by General James Wilkinson, and was named after his friend, Commodore James Gibson. It was the first permanent settlement in the area, and was an important port city during the antebellum period.
Port Gibson was an important port city during the antebellum period, and was a major center of the cotton trade. The city was also a major stop on the Natchez Trace, a major trade route between the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico. During the Civil War, Port Gibson was the site of several battles, including the Battle of Port Gibson in 1863. The city was also the site of the first African American college in the state, Alcorn State University, which was founded in 1871.

Geography

Port Gibson is located in the southwestern corner of Claiborne County, Mississippi. It is situated on the banks of the Big Black River, and is approximately 25 miles south of Vicksburg and 40 miles north of Natchez. The city has a total area of 4.2 square miles, all of which is land. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the surrounding area.
