Morton Summary

Morton is a city located in Scott County, Mississippi. It is the county seat of Scott County and is located in the central part of the state. The population of Morton was 2,945 at the 2010 census.

History

Morton was founded in 1871 by the Mississippi Central Railroad. The town was named after the railroad's president, William Morton. The town was incorporated in 1872 and was the first town in Scott County. The first post office was established in 1873.
Morton was a major center of the lumber industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The town was home to several sawmills and lumber companies. The town also had a cotton gin and a grist mill.
In the early 20th century, Morton was a major center of the cotton industry. The town had several cotton gins and cotton warehouses. The town also had a cottonseed oil mill.

Geography

Morton is located at 32°45'25" North, 89°37'45" West (32.756944, -89.629167). The city is situated in the central part of the state, about 25 miles south of Jackson, the state capital.
Morton has a total area of 4.2 square miles, all of which is land. The city is located in the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta region of the state. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills.

Economy

Morton's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms and ranches, as well as a number of agricultural-related businesses. The town is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory and a paper mill.
