Hillsboro Summary

Hillsboro is a small town located in Montgomery County, Mississippi. It is situated on the banks of the Big Black River, approximately 20 miles south of the state capital, Jackson. The town was founded in 1837 and is named after the nearby Hillsboro Plantation. The population of Hillsboro was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Hillsboro is located at 33°17'25"N 90°45'45"W (33.290278, -90.762500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all land.

Economy

Hillsboro is a small rural town with a limited economy. The main industries in the area are agriculture and timber. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 431 households, and 287 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.4 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 690.0 per square mile (266.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.2% White, 19.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.2% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population.
There were 431 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $25,625, and the median income for a family was $31,250. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females.
