Courtland Summary

History

The town of Courtland, Mississippi is located in the northeastern part of the state, in the county of Panola. It was founded in 1836 and named after the nearby Courtland Plantation. The plantation was owned by the prominent family of the same name, who were among the earliest settlers in the area. The town was originally a small farming community, but it grew rapidly in the late 19th century due to the development of the railroad. The railroad brought new industry and commerce to the area, and the town soon became a hub for cotton production and processing.
In the early 20th century, Courtland was a thriving community with a population of over 1,000 people. It had a variety of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a cotton gin, and several stores. The town was also home to a number of churches, including the First Baptist Church, which was founded in 1837.
In the 1950s, Courtland began to decline as the railroad industry declined and the cotton industry moved away. The population dropped to just over 500 people by the 1970s. In the 1980s, the town began to experience a resurgence as new businesses moved in and the population began to grow again.
