History
Stone County was established in 1916 from parts of Harrison and Jackson Counties. It was named for John M. Stone, who served as Governor of Mississippi from 1876 to 1882. The county was originally part of the Choctaw Nation, and the area was first settled by European Americans in the early 1800s.
