Dighton Summary

Dighton is a small town located in Lane County, Kansas, United States. It is situated along the banks of the Arkansas River, approximately 20 miles south of the state capital, Topeka. The population was 1,072 at the 2010 census.

History

Dighton was founded in 1887 by the Kansas Pacific Railway. The town was named after Dighton Rock, a large boulder located in nearby Berkley, Massachusetts. The rock is believed to have been inscribed by Native Americans in the 16th century.
The town was originally a farming community, but in the early 20th century, it became a center for oil production. The discovery of oil in the area led to a boom in population and economic growth. By the 1950s, Dighton had become a thriving community with a population of over 1,000.

Geography

Dighton is located at 38°45'25" North, 99°17'45" West (38.756944, -99.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Dighton’s economy is largely based on agriculture and oil production. The town is home to several grain elevators, as well as a number of oil wells. The town also has a small manufacturing sector, with several small businesses located in the area.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,072 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,521.2 people per square mile (586.2/km2). There were 476 housing units at an average density of 672.2 per square mile (259.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $31,250, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,945.
