Parker, South Dakota is a small town located in Turner County, South Dakota. It is situated on the Big Sioux River, about 25 miles south of Sioux Falls. The town was founded in 1881 and was named after the first postmaster, William Parker. The population of Parker was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Parker is located at 43°14'17" North, 96°37'45" West (43.238, -96.629). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Parker is a small town with a population of 1,845 people. The town is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, a restaurant, and a few other small businesses. The town also has a post office, a library, and a fire station.
The town is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer, a metal fabricator, and a machine shop. The town also has a few small farms and ranches.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.7 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 672.5 per square mile (259.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.3% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
