Morningside Summary

Morningside is a small city located in the southeastern corner of South Dakota, in the United States. It is situated in the extreme southeastern corner of the state, just north of the Iowa border. The city is located in the Sioux Falls metropolitan area, and is part of the Sioux Falls-Mitchell-Yankton Combined Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 1,845.

History

Morningside was founded in 1883 by a group of settlers from Iowa. The city was named after the Morningside neighborhood of Sioux City, Iowa, which was the hometown of many of the settlers. The city was incorporated in 1887.
Morningside was a small farming community for much of its history. In the early 20th century, the city began to grow as a result of the construction of the Sioux Falls and Morningside Railroad. The railroad connected Morningside to Sioux Falls, and allowed for the transportation of goods and services to and from the city.

Geography

Morningside is located at 43°30'N 96°37'W (43.500, -96.617). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Morningside's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large agricultural operations, including a large dairy farm and a large hog farm. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer and a metal fabrication company.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.7 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 672.5 per square mile (259.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
