Mitchell, South Dakota is a city located in the southeastern part of the state, in Davison County. It is the county seat and the largest city in the county, with a population of 15,254 as of the 2010 census. The city is located along the James River, and is the home of the world-famous Corn Palace, a tourist attraction that draws visitors from all over the world.

History

The area that is now Mitchell was first settled in 1879 by a group of settlers from Wisconsin. The city was named after Alexander Mitchell, a Milwaukee banker and railroad magnate who had helped finance the railroad that ran through the area. The city was incorporated in 1883, and the first post office was established in 1884.
In 1892, the city was chosen as the site of the world's first Corn Palace, a tourist attraction that was built to showcase the agricultural products of the area. The Corn Palace has been rebuilt several times over the years, and is now a major tourist attraction in the area.

Geography

Mitchell is located at 43°43'N 98°00'W (43.717, -98.000). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Mitchell is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to several large agricultural businesses, including the world-famous Corn Palace, which draws visitors from all over the world. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a large pork processing plant.
The city is also home to several educational institutions, including Dakota Wesleyan University, Mitchell Technical Institute, and the Mitchell School District.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 15,254 people, 6,093 households, and 3,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,856.2 people per square mile (717.3/km2). There were 6,619 housing units at an average density of 807.2 per square mile (311.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.3% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 6,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.3% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,945, and the median income for a family was $45,945. Males had a median income of $31,945 versus $22,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,945.
