Ipswich Summary

Ipswich is a small town located in Edmunds County, South Dakota, United States. It is situated in the northeastern part of the state, about 25 miles west of Aberdeen. The population of Ipswich was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Ipswich was founded in 1883 by a group of settlers from Ipswich, Massachusetts. The town was named after the Massachusetts town, and the first post office was established in 1884. The town was incorporated in 1887.
The town was originally a farming community, but in the early 1900s, the railroad came to town, bringing with it a new industry. The railroad provided jobs for many of the town's residents, and it also allowed for the transportation of goods and services to and from the town.

Geography

Ipswich is located at 45°37'25" North, 98°17'45" West (45.623, -98.296). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Ipswich is a small town with a limited economy. The town's main industry is agriculture, with many of the town's residents employed in farming and ranching. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 662.2 per square mile (255.7/km2).
