Dante Summary

Dante is a small town located in the southeastern corner of South Dakota, in the United States. It is situated in the extreme southeastern corner of the state, near the border with Iowa and Minnesota. The town is located in Union County, and is part of the Sioux Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Dante was 545.

History

Dante was founded in 1883 by a group of settlers from Norway. The town was named after the Italian poet Dante Alighieri, and was originally known as “Dante’s Corner”. The town was incorporated in 1887, and the first post office was established in 1888.
In the early years, the town was primarily an agricultural community, with the main crops being wheat, corn, and oats. The town also had a number of small businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a hotel.
In the early 1900s, the town began to experience a period of growth. The railroad arrived in 1906, and the town was connected to the rest of the state by a branch of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. This allowed for the transportation of goods and people to and from the town.
In the 1920s, the town experienced a period of decline. The railroad was abandoned, and the town’s population began to decline. However, in the 1950s, the town began to experience a period of growth again. The population increased from 441 in 1950 to 545 in 2010.
