Claire City Summary
Claire City, South Dakota is a small city located in the southeastern corner of the state. It is situated in the Missouri River Valley, and is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. The city has a population of approximately 1,500 people, and is the county seat of Roberts County.
History
Claire City was founded in 1883 by a group of settlers from Wisconsin. The city was named after the daughter of one of the settlers, and was incorporated in 1887. The city was originally a farming community, and the main crops grown were wheat, corn, and oats. In the early 1900s, the city began to grow and develop, and the population increased.
In the 1920s, the city began to experience a period of growth and prosperity. The city was home to several businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a general store, and a movie theater. The city also had a railroad station, which connected it to other towns in the area.
During the Great Depression, the city experienced a period of decline. Many of the businesses closed, and the population decreased. However, the city was able to recover, and by the 1950s, the population had increased again.
Geography
Claire City is located in the southeastern corner of South Dakota, in the Missouri River Valley. The city is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. The city is located approximately 30 miles from the state capital, Pierre.
